In-house vs outsourced IT: which is right for your business?

At some point most growing businesses ask the same question: should we hire someone to handle IT, or bring in an outside provider? It’s a fair question, and the honest answer is, it depends. Here’s how we’d think it through.

The case for in-house IT

An in-house person knows your business intimately, is there in the building, and can pick things up instantly. For larger teams with constant, hands-on needs, that presence is valuable.

But there are real limits. One person can only know so much, networks, security, cloud, data and hardware are all specialisms. They take holidays and get sick, usually at the worst possible moment. And the true cost is more than a salary: recruitment, tools, training, software licensing and cover all add up.

The case for outsourcing

A good managed provider gives you a whole team’s worth of skills for a predictable monthly cost, with no gaps when someone’s away. You get proactive monitoring, security built in, and access to specialists you couldn’t justify hiring individually.

It isn’t always either/or

The in-house person stops being a single point of failure, and you stop relying on one person to know everything.

Add up the real cost of an in-house hire, salary, tools, licensing, training and cover, and compare it to a managed plan for your team size. Then ask which option actually reduces your risk and frees you to focus on the business. For most organisations under 100 staff, outsourcing (or a hybrid) wins on both cost and resilience.
